20090218 Kihon/Kata Training

Played hookie from school today so I did not get a chance to hang out with Fred the Heavy Bag.

Went to the gym with my wife instead and had a mix day of bodyweight exercise and kihon/kata.

Goal:
Burpee Pullups: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
DB Swings: 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11
Pushups: 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11

Performed in a circuit for time

Actual:
Burpee Pullups: 10, 7, 6, 5, 5
DB Swings: 20, 20, 20, 20, 20
Pushups: 10, 10, 10, 10, 10

11:34.4 was my time for this workout. If I had to venture a guess at the suggested workout I would time it at 20 to 25 minutes.

Afterward helped my wife with kihon ippon kumite and heian yondan (pinan sono yon). Worked through the sokugis, pinans (heian) for me.

I am familiar with the pinans for kyokushin but I am muddling the stances and techniques between SKIF Shotokan and Kyokushin now. I have to remember to keep both kata separate and work on both. Being a bilingual karateka is a good thing.

Primary differences between Shotokan and Kyokushin kata are the stances
- Shotokan uses Kokutsu Dachi whilst Kyokushin uses more Neko Ashi Dachi.
- Shotokan performs Shuto Uke vs Kyokushin Shuto Mawashi Uke
- There are a few subtle differences and I can tell that I am off practice from my kyokushin form. In any case here are is a sample of the pinans and sokugis I am working on.

- The biggest error was the level of my yoko geri (sidekick). The yoko geri is gedan (lower) level. My yoko geri was a mixture between jodan and chudan. Will work on that.

I am trying to practice my kata in four parts:

- First time slow and steady working on technique
- Second time as fast as I can trying to mind correct stance and technique but the emphasis is on speed
- Third time I work steady and with maximum power. Everything is under dynamic tension like Sanchin or Tensho. Each block is slow and hard. Each strike is set up for maximum execution.
- Fourth time I try to bring all three together. Technique. Speed. Power.
